Brainwashing: The True and Terrible Story of the Men who Endured and Defied The Most Diabolical Red Torture, by Edward Hunter, 1968 (5th Printing) - was originally published in 1958 and was the first true account of the techniques of brainwashing applied to American Soldiers during the Korean war. The term originates from the Chinese, hsi nao - which literally translated means "wash brain", and the techniques applied to soldiers originated during the Korean war in the early 1950s. The U.S. Military was confounded as to why some of their servicemen, who were captured and put into PoW camps during the Korean war, outwardly rejected American democracy and beliefs and projected communist sentiment. Later, after the publication of this book, Edward Hunter (author) testified in front of the committee for Un-American activities as to the techniques used during the Korean war to brainwash American servicemen. This book is of individual accounts with those servicemen who later told their story to Edward Hunter. It was a groundbreaking work that lead the CIA under Alan Dulles to conduct research in the field of mind control which later became known as the infamous MK-ULTRA project.
A fascinating read and very good paperback edition, hard to find for a good price.
